Digitale Engel: Giving Our Old Computers a New Life

Computers, smartphones, tablets and smartwatches have become an important part of everyday life.

Doctor’s appointments are booked online, communication with public authorities is increasingly digital, and staying in touch with family and friends happens more and more through screens. For many people, digital technology has become a key to participating fully in society.

But not everyone has access. For people on low incomes, digital devices are often simply out of reach, along with the opportunities they enable. To support them, we donated more than 40 decommissioned computers (without hard drives) as well as projectors to digitale-engel.de last week.

There, our devices get a second life, right where they are truly needed.

The aim of Digital Angels is to help people on low incomes gain access to the digital world. To do this, the organisation collects donated hardware and accessories, refurbishes them and passes them on so they can be used again.

In addition, Digital Angels supports people in learning how to use the devices through its “Future Cafés.” There, participants build essential digital skills and get practical guidance, helping them navigate the digital world safely and independently.

“With this initiative, we are focusing on sustainability and responsibility. Instead of disposing of technology that is still usable, we are donating it to a good cause. In doing so, we support the work of Digital Angels, who pass this equipment on to people in need and help ensure access to the digital world.”
Giovanni Longhitano, Administration Manager Phorms Frankfurt Taunus

A special thank you goes to Holger Lang and Bernhard Euler from the local IT support team at Phorms Frankfurt Taunus, who initiated this project and played a key role in driving it forward.
