Bro-foxes, ice worms and climate change in literature

 

Demonstrations against the global rise in temperatures bring hundreds of thousands of young people onto the streets last summer. "Climate hysteria" is voted the bad word of 2019. In Australia, bushfires of unprecedented proportions rage around the turn of the year...

 

And in literature? Business as usual? Love and death? Not at all! Books also reflect the events of the world on this subject. And for this reason, the next library evening will focus exclusively on texts that deal with the environment, its protection, its destruction, climate change and the role that humans play in it.

We get to know clever foxes who lead the animals of the forest out of great danger into a better future, and foxes who would also like to do the same with their buddies. However, they fail because - despite their cleverness - they are no longer able to cope with the world. We understand why crabs and sardines help a faintly glowing species of algae to take over the world, and we learn about ice worms that perforate the methane hydrate shield off the Norwegian coast so thoroughly that the entire continental slope slips away and the apocalypse literally descends upon mankind...

 

The next library evening will take place on Thursday, March 5, at 6 p.m. in the high school library. Students and parents are cordially invited to book presentations and discussions and, as always, we will be serving wine, juice and small snacks.
